Key Takeaways
- People are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity for instant answers, and they often never click a link.
- Visibility no longer begins when someone lands on your website. It begins when AI decides which brands and experts are credible enough to include in its answer.
- Traditional metrics like traffic, clicks, and rankings no longer tell the full story, because influence now happens before any measurable interaction.
- Earned media is becoming reputation infrastructure. The signals that build human trust are increasingly the same signals AI uses to decide who to reference.
- To improve brand visibility in AI search, organizations need to be represented in the answer itself, not just discoverable in search results.
For most of my career in public relations, reputation management, and strategic communications, visibility was relatively straightforward. You built awareness through media coverage, strong content, search visibility, and thought leadership. Success was measured by website traffic, rankings, clicks, and engagement. Today, I’m watching that model change in real time.
People aren’t searching the way they used to. They’re increasingly turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity to get immediate answers to their questions. Instead of reviewing pages of search results, they’re receiving a summarized response in seconds. Often, they never click a link.
That shift is not a prediction anymore. It’s measurable. In early 2026, more than two-thirds of US Google searches ended without a click to any website), up sharply from just two years earlier. For the first time, the majority of searches resolve inside the result itself.
That’s what makes the zero-click phenomenon so important. In my view, it’s one of the biggest shifts public relations and reputation management professionals have faced in decades.
The conversation can now happen without anyone ever visiting your website. Which means the question leaders should be asking isn’t, “How many people clicked?” It’s, “Did AI mention us at all?”
If Someone Asked AI About Your Industry, Would Your Brand Be Visible?
This is a question I think every leadership team should be exploring right now. Imagine a potential customer, investor, journalist, job candidate, or stakeholder asks AI for recommendations, insights, or information related to your industry.
Would your organization be included in the answer? Would your spokesperson be referenced? Would your expertise be recognized? Or would AI point people toward your competitors?
What I’m finding is that many organizations still believe visibility begins when someone lands on their website. That’s not true anymore.
Visibility increasingly begins when AI decides which brands, experts, and organizations are credible enough to include in its response. And if you’re not part of that answer, you may never become part of the consideration set.
Are We Measuring the Wrong Things?
One of the biggest mistakes I see organizations making is relying exclusively on traditional communications metrics. Website traffic. Click-through rates. Search rankings. Downloads. These metrics still matter. But they no longer tell the full story.
In a zero-click environment, influence often happens before any measurable interaction occurs. A stakeholder may form an opinion about your organization before they visit your website. A customer may narrow their options before they click a link. A journalist may develop a perception of your expertise before they ever reach out.
That’s why I believe leaders need to start asking different questions:
- Is our organization showing up in AI-generated answers?
- Is our expertise being cited and referenced?
- Is our perspective influencing how topics are explained?
- Are competitors being recommended while we’re being overlooked?
Because reputation is increasingly shaped before engagement begins.
What Is AI Learning About Your Organization?
This is where the conversation gets particularly interesting. AI doesn’t invent credibility. It learns from the signals available across the internet.
Every media interview. Every article. Every expert quote. Every thought leadership piece. Every mention of your organization. Together, they create a digital reputation footprint.
The stronger, more credible, and more consistent that footprint becomes, the more likely AI is to recognize your organization as a trusted source of information.
This is one of the reasons I’m so bullish on earned media right now. For years, earned media has been valuable because people trust third-party validation. Today, that same validation is becoming increasingly important for AI systems as well.
When credible publications repeatedly associate your organization with expertise, leadership, and authority, those signals accumulate. And increasingly, AI notices.
Is Your Media Coverage Creating Long-Term Value?
Historically, many organizations treated media coverage as a moment. Get the story. Share it online. Celebrate the win. Move on. I believe that mindset needs to change.
Today, every earned media placement has the potential to become part of the information ecosystem AI uses to understand who you are. That’s a significant shift.
A strong media footprint can influence future AI-generated answers. Consistent messaging can shape how topics are explained. Thought leadership can increase the likelihood that your experts are referenced. Authority can compound over time.
In other words, earned media is no longer just about awareness. It’s becoming part of your organization’s AI reputation infrastructure.
Are You Building Brand Visibility in AI Before People Need You?
One of the most fascinating changes I’m seeing is that discovery is happening earlier than ever. People are making decisions faster. They’re researching fewer sources. They’re relying on AI summaries to narrow options before engaging further.
The behaviour is now well documented. Bain & Company found that around 60% of searches end without a click, and that most consumers already rely on AI-written results for a meaningful share of their research. People are deciding inside the answer, not on your page.
That means organizations can no longer focus solely on being found in search. They need to focus on being represented in the answer itself. Because when AI becomes the first touchpoint, visibility isn’t about winning the click. It’s about earning a place in the conversation before anyone starts clicking.
What Happens When AI Doesn’t Know Who You Are?
This may be the most important question of all. Because whether organizations realize it or not, AI is rapidly becoming a reputation gatekeeper. It influences what people learn. Who they trust. Which organizations they consider. And increasingly, who they choose.
And the audience relying on these tools is no longer a niche. Pew Research Center found that about a third of US adults have already used ChatGPT, roughly double the share two years earlier, rising to a majority of adults under 30.
Organizations that consistently build credibility through earned media, thought leadership, expert positioning, and strategic communications are giving AI more reasons to recognize and reference them.
Organizations that remain invisible risk becoming even more invisible in an AI-driven world. And that’s not a marketing problem. That’s a reputation problem.
If AI Is the New First Impression, What Does Yours Look Like?
For years, organizations focused on managing what appeared in search results. Today, leaders need to pay equal attention to what appears in answers.
Your reputation is no longer shaped solely by what people find when they search. It’s increasingly shaped by what AI tells them before they search.
The organizations that thrive in the years ahead won’t simply be the ones with the best rankings. They’ll be the organizations that have invested in credibility, authority, earned media, and reputation long before the question was ever asked.
Because in the age of AI, being discoverable isn’t enough. You need to be referenceable.
Does Your Reputation End at Google Anymore?
Today’s audiences may never visit your website. They may never click your content. Instead, they’re relying on AI-generated answers to make decisions about who to trust, hire, partner with, or buy from.
The organizations that earn visibility in trusted media today will be the organizations AI recommends tomorrow.
